Like You’ve Never Seen Elk Viewing

The Pigeon River Country State Forest, in the south eastern corner of the Indian River Area, is the home to Michigan’s only free-roaming elk herd. With about 500 head of elk, this heard provides prime elk viewing opportunities year round. The population is managed through the Michigan Department of Natural Resources which monitors the numbers and issues elk hunting licenses annually to a lottery selected few.
